Science
Overview
At Honywood, we want learners to not only progress in the subject but to develop a love for science and to understand how it links to their everyday lives. It’s not only about preparing them for their exams, but it’s about preparing them for the world beyond school.
KS3
Our KS3 curriculum is both challenging and engaging. Each topic has been carefully designed to build upon another to help with their understanding and retrieval of the subject.
They study four units each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. These are;
Biology
- Cells
- Body systems
- Gas exchange
- Relationships between organisms
Chemistry
- Particles
- Environmental chemistry
- Chemical patterns
- Chemical reactions
Physics
- Forces and motion
- Energy
- Light and sound
- Circuits and magnets
Within each unit we look to build their practical and mathematical mastery through stimulating and relevant hands on activities, discussions and written work. We set valuable independent study to either practice what they have been learning in a lesson, look ahead at a new topic or revise older content. Learners are assessed regularly, both within sessions and at the end of a unit using varied methods such as quizzes, discussions, questioning and formal assessments.
KS4
We follow the AQA 9-1 science courses where learners will be selected to take Triple science or Combined Science (Trilogy) from the start of Cohort 9.. In Triple science they learn more science content and obtain three separate GCSEs for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In Combined Science (Trilogy) they get two GCSEs which is a combination of all three sciences. Then, in Cohort 11 we then make the decision whether the Foundation or Higher paper is more appropriate for them.
