At Honywood Community Science School learners are offered a broad curriculum and the guided choices process ensures that learners study a wide range of subjects which meet their needs and prepare them for life beyond school. Most courses will lead to examination in GCSE and continue throughout Cohorts 10 and 11.
All learners study English, Mathematics (some learners may also take Statistics), Science, Humanities and a Foreign Modern Language as a GCSE. All learners undertake Physical Education to encourage a healthy lifestyle even if they take no examination in this subject. In addition to this core they can select to study the following GCSE subjects: Art, Business Studies, Computer Science, Drama, Food Technology, Geography, Graphics, History, Media, Music, Physical Education, Philosophy and Ethics, Resistant Materials, Spanish, Textiles.
Careers Education and Guidance, Health Education, Environmental Education and Citizenship continue to be taught throughout Cohorts10 and 11.
A number of vocational course places are also available in subject areas such as Motor Vehicle Maintenance, Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy, Carpentry, Painting and Decorating, Construction and Catering. These courses are NVQ accredited and are available through our close partnership with Braintree College and Colchester Institute.
Learners receive support and guidance from the school in making these important decisions about their future. Learning Group Leaders and Subject Teachers are able to advise initially. Learners and parents are invited to attend two evenings in March; a Core Subject Information Evening and a Guided Choices Evening to ask further questions and gain more information. Families also receive an Guided Choices Booklet which provides information and explains the guided choices process.
